We make hundreds of burritos every week to deliver to soup kitchens, day centers, and authorized homeless camps. We provide food and encouragement to our neighbors who are in need, and we engage people in service to our community.
Burritos are a good way to get solid nutrition into the hands of people who may be struggling to find adequate food. Our burritos are a simple recipe of cheese, black beans, brown rice, and a wheat tortilla, plus seasoning. They are delicious when heated, they keep well in a refrigerator, and they are fun to make in a group!
Our strategy is to “help the helpers.” That is, we provide burritos to programs that are working to serve the homeless and the poor, to lighten their burden. Our principle client is St. Luke’s Edible Hope Kitchen in Ballard, which serves breakfast to 200 people every weekday from 7:00-10:00 AM. We send them 250 burritos per week; they serve 50 per day. They tell us it’s a big relief to have food in the refrigerator that they can heat up in the middle of the morning, to take some pressure off the volunteer cooks.
Other places that we have supplied include: the Phinney Neighborhood Association Hot Meal Program, Aurora Commons, Nickelsville Northlake, Licton Springs Tiny House Village, Whittier Heights Tiny House Village, Nickelsville Georgetown, and Camp United We Stand. You can see the details of our deliveries on our Burrito Scoreboard spreadsheet. We are working to expand our production and regularize our deliveries.
To see current updates and to volunteer, please visit the Burritos Without Borders Facebook Group. Our weekly “Burrito Party” appears there as an “event.” We meet from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM every Saturday at the Greenwood Senior Center.
Burritos Without Borders is a project of David’s Kitchen in partnership with the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA). The PNA provides the use of the excellent commercial kitchen at the Greenwood Senior Center, where we cook beans and rice on their beautiful new stove, and where we assemble burritos at our weekly Burrito Party.
